The charming lagoon of Marano, that touches the Western part of the peninsula, forms an area of exceptional landscape beauty and a rare ecosystem of great naturalistic and environmental value. It is a wealth of rare fauna species, hardy marsh vegetation, unique fishermen settlements with picturesque reed “casoni”, where traces of the past lagoon culture can still be found, evidence of living customs the origins of which have been lost in time. The lagoon encompasses in its indented arch of small islands and sandbanks, traces of ancient history, which can still be seen in the remarkable Venetian settlement of Marano, a traditional fishing village that has been enclosed inside fortified walls since the beginning of the 19th Century. Several resurgent rivers, partially navigable, flow into the lagoon of Marano, crossed by an intricate grid of canals. The River Stella is particularly rich in environmental and landscape beauty. This river mouth has been placed under protection as a refuge and repopulation oasis for aquatic, migratory and sedentary birdlife and has been equipped with bird-watching towers
